National US Census numbers indicate that the current generation of American women are waiting much longer than their parents did to marry and begin Families. The National Jewish Population study performed by Jewish Federations of North America (formerly United Jewish Communities) showed that Jewish women, in particular, were marrying even later than the general US population.
Why do you think Jewish women are waiting so long to get married and start families?

I think it may be not so much the women... but rather the men!

I think it may be not so much the women... but rather the men! Or maybe it's a combination of factors -- great, well-educated, self-confident and the men who were raised by them!

Here's a thought... Women are now (rightfully) taught that we can be anything. We can experience the world, earn impressive educations, and enter any profession as well as be wives and mothers. Possibly, however, the old stereotypes about marriage still exist in our heads: that being married and starting families means denying ourselves the academic and professional successes we might enjoy and achieve on our own. If this is the case, it would make sense that women are waiting longer to marry. Maybe women are not opposed to marrying earlier but are committing to themselves before committing to another. It's balance that is (and probably always will be) the challenge!

seekinghappilyeverafter.com/index.html - This is a great documentary film we saw during our very first Jewish Women's Salon event (then called 614 Ezine in Tidewater). The Filmmaker was also our guest facilitator at this event. Available on itunes, it was a real gem of a film. If you've not had a chance to see it, you might want to... it seeks to answer some of the reasons about why women in general -- not specifically Jewish women -- are marrying later in life OR opting not to marry at all.
